The Varsity Jacket, often referred to as the Letterman Jacket, was first worn in the United States in the late 1800s to recognize players and team captains. The earliest jackets were made of wool and had embroidered team letters on the chest, leather sleeves, and snap closures and also in a plain design which is all time favorite. Typically, high school or college teams with red-based colors would wear the maroon color.
